Got ItBMW EfficientLightweight is a showcase example of how efficient driving and dynamic driving combine perfectly. Thanks to the use of especially lightweight and stiff materials − such as carbon in the passenger cell, aluminium in the chassis, high-strength steel in the body or ultra-modern magnesium alloys in the engine − fuel consumption is reduced while, at the same time, driving performance and dynamics are improved.
Whether on long trips, in stop-and-go traffic or on normal urban journeys, the Driving Experience Control guarantees varied driving pleasure to match your personal preferences. Drivers can choose between the four different modes COMFORT, SPORT, ADAPTIVE in combination with the special equipment option of Adaptive suspension, and ECO PRO. The following will give more detailed information of the ECO PRO and its intelligent package of technologies that enables drivers to reduce fuel consumption by up to 25 per cent.
In the standard default setting of COMFORT mode, the
tuning of the chassis components guarantees an
especially comfortable driving experience. For
maximum efficiency as well as comfort, this mode
additionally offers the option of coasting.
In the modes of SPORT and – additionally for M
models – SPORT+, all drive and suspension settings
are geared towards a sporty driving style. The
engine responds more spontaneously, the gears of the
automatic transmission change at higher revs and the
shift points on the manual gearbox are displayed
later. Overall, the reaction of the vehicle is
firmer and more direct.
The interactive mode ADAPTIVE adjusts the Dynamic
Damper Control, the steering and the Steptronic
transmission continuously and interactively with the
real-time navigation to match the driving situation
and driving style.
ECO PRO is the consumption-optimised driving mode of
the Driving Experience Control. As a central
constituent of BMW EfficientDynamics, ECO PRO
includes an intelligent package of technologies that
enables drivers to reduce fuel consumption by up to
25 per cent.
In ECO PRO mode, the parameters of accelerator pedal and Steptronic transmission change. The flatter ECO accelerator pedal curve reduces the ratio of injection volume to accelerator pedal angle. At the same time, the adaptation of the shift points causes gears to shift up earlier and reduces downshifts. These functions encourage a sedate driving style with greater fuel economy. When required, however, drivers can still access the full performance and downshift characteristics by pressing down the accelerator pedal to its full extent.
To keep consumption low, the ECO PRO mode regulates the climate and comfort functions for the interior in an intelligent way. This involves reducing energy consumers such as the air conditioning system or seat heating for the passengers almost imperceptibly. Together with the other ECO PRO measures, this produces fuel savings of up to 25 per cent.
The Route-Ahead Assistant regulates the use of coasting phases to reduce fuel consumption on the basis of the road ahead and events that are not yet visible. To do this, the system evaluates data from the navigation system and recognition of vehicles ahead and gives advice to reduce speed in appropriate situations. When the driver then releases the accelerator pedal, the connection in the Steptronic transmission is disengaged and the vehicle coasts efficiently. As the only fuel consumed during coasting is from the engine idling speed, drivers can save up to five per cent of fuel with the aid of the Route-Ahead Assistant.
In addition to ECO PRO features such as the Route-Ahead Assistant or the altered characteristics of the drivetrain, drivers also receive support for a consumption-optimised driving style through displays and infographics. This support comes from relevant driving data such as average and current fuel consumption, consumption history, bonus range or the coasting distance covered in kilometres and is presented visually in the Control Display and in the instrument cluster. It gives drivers direct feedback and additionally motivates them to adopt an anticipatory and energy-saving driving style.
You press down on the brake. At the same time, energy is
produced. Valuable kinetic energy that can be exploited. Brake
Energy Regeneration transforms it into electrical energy and
uses it to charge the battery instead of letting it dissipate to
no effect. Less effort is also required from the engine to
charge the battery, which in turn reduces fuel consumption and
emissions.
Conventional systems for supporting the driver’s steering power work with hydraulics. They are in permanent operation – even if the driver is not moving the steering wheel at all. And this costs energy. In the case of Electric Power Steering, an electric motor replaces the hydraulics and only becomes active when the driver actually moves the steering wheel. On straight roads or with a constant steering angle in corners, the system does not intervene and uses no energy. Fuel consumption is reduced as a result, while the typical BMW dynamic driving experience is retained.
The consumption-optimised ECO PRO mode ensures that the accelerator pedal and transmission parameters together with the heating/climate control strategy are all intelligently adapted. ECO PRO tips help you to enhance your own driving behaviour and the Bonus range informs you of how many additional kilometres you have gained by driving with optimised consumption in the ECO PRO mode.
Choosing the right moment to change gear is a key to efficiency. The most efficient gear at any point in time is calculated according to the driving situation together with the engine speed and then shown in the Info Display.
The system also recognises rapid acceleration and will delay its recommendation accordingly until the engine speed is up. Comparative tests have shown that vehicles with the Optimum Shift Indicator use around four per cent less fuel.
Save fuel effectively: The Automatic Start/Stop function ensures that fuel is only consumed when the car is moving. When the vehicle comes to a temporary stop, for example at traffic lights or in congested traffic, the Automatic Start/Stop function saves fuel by simply switching off the engine. As soon as the clutch is depressed (manual transmission) or the brake is released (Steptronic transmission), the engine starts up again automatically in a fraction of a second.
Whenever the driver takes their foot off the accelerator without braking, the Coasting function cuts the power between the engine and drive in vehicles with an automatic transmission. It is a part of the ECO PRO mode. The vehicle rolls along without any resistance from the engine, which rotates at idle speed consuming a minimum of fuel and with low emissions.
The Route-ahead assistant is a function included in the ECO PRO mode and it helps the driver to adopt an extremely efficient way of driving. In conjunction with the Navigation system Professional, it recognises speed limits, city limits, bends, roundabouts, turns and motorway exits along the chosen route and gives tips in advance about when to reduce speed.
